How to Help Your Divorce Go Smoothly

On Behalf of Law Offices of Thomas Maynard Oct. 20, 2020

You have probably heard horror stories from friends about how terrible their divorce was. You might have seen it first-hand if you supported them through the crisis. Now that you are about to divorce, you may be wondering if it will be as bad for you.

Divorce does not have to be a tumultuous affair. Many Lebanon couples manage to end their marriage without fireworks. These are some tips if you want to end your marriage in relative peace and calm:

  • Forget about the past: You cannot change what has happened. The day you decide to divorce is the chance to draw a line under the past. Reminding your partner of something they did last year is pointless and will only create resentment. Focus only on the future and how you can move from where you are now to where you would like to be.

  • Put your children first: If you have children, they should be your No. 1 priority. Each time you need to make a decision, ask yourself what is best for your children.

  • Stay civil: You do not have to like your soon to be ex-spouse. You do have to remain polite toward them. Anger or sarcastic comments will only inflame the situation and distract you from the important issues.

  • Stick to the facts: When negotiating the financial aspect of your divorce, treat it like a math equation rather than a philosophical debate. It is much harder to argue with the cold hard evidence of a spreadsheet explaining your future financial needs.

Divorce is not a journey to undertake alone. An experienced attorney can guide you through the process and provide an objective opinion.
