Website May Be a Front for Sex Crimes
The internet has given rise to many beneficial websites over the years. Unfortunately, there are some that are not necessarily beneficial. One of those sites is reportedly being used as a front for sex crimes in Tennessee.
The Clarksville Police Department is attempting to stem the rise in sex crimes that they believe the site is contributing to. They have launched a project that involves officers going undercover in an attempt to identify and prosecute offenders using it. The site operates by providing a phone number that a person can call to arrange a meeting place. Upon arriving at the designated spot, the prospective customer is met by an undercover officer. The locations include many area hotels and motels.
Police claim to have made 13 arrests since the beginning of the operation. The accused individuals come from varied financial and professional backgrounds. The charges against them include prostitution and illegal weapons possession. Officers are concerned that the website may also be being used for human trafficking.
Facing charges for sex crimes in Tennessee can be a harrowing and terrifying experience. Anyone arrested and charged with a crime is presumed innocent until — and only if — proven guilty in a court of law. A defendant has a right to the counsel of an attorney, and a knowledgeable lawyer can inform a suspect of one’s rights under the law and advise the client regarding any legal options available. The burden of proof falls on the prosecution. The prosecution must demonstrate that the accused is guilty and that the evidence presented must support guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
